While this Arturcus wool blanket is described as heavy, it weighs in at 4lb, so it’s not crazy heavy to carry. The density of this blanket makes it one of the warmest available, with wool blankets being one of the warmest types on the market.
This blanket’s huge, with it’s fully open size being 64″ x 88″, so there’s going to be more than enough blanket to totally enclose you, or two people really.
Being 80% wool, this blanket’s going to arrive to you smelling of…wool, and slightly chemically, so give it a good wash following the instructions (if you’ve ever shrunk wool you’ll know what I’m talking about!) and this blanket becomes soft, ready for snuggling in.
The one thing this blanket could really use is a carry case, or even a strap with a carry handle. Because of the size of the blanket, it’s easier to carry this separately and not in your camping backpack, and a handle would really be useful. What’s The Best Blanket For Winter?
The best blanket for Winter camping is going to one that’s easy to carry with you and is well made, so you don’t end up with a soggy damp blanket when you settle in for the night. Winter air is often damp, so it’s important that if the blanket is fleece, is has a waterproof coating to stop the moisture getting in. Wool is naturally damp proof (as well as fire retardant!).
Make sure the blanket you buy is big enough to keep you fully covered at night. We really like the size of some of these blankets, they’re big enough to have over and under you, because the more you’re enveloped in the blanket the warmer you’re going to be.
Camping Blankets Instead Of A Sleeping Bag
While you can of course use a camping blanket instead of a sleeping bag, personally, I like to have both! Warmth in freezing temperatures comes from layering, and so while a good quality blanket does the job of keeping you warm well, getting cosy in a sleeping bag and then covering yourself with a camping blanket is going to offer the best protection against the cold.
We’d also recommend getting a camping sleep mat to go under anything you’re sleeping on. Not only do they offer a little extra comfort when you’re out in the wilderness, but they’ll give you another added layer against the cold.
